Environmental studies are carried out for many different purposes, i.e. the monitoring of the waters and sediment’s pollution, beach erosion and coastal protection, management of coastal water intakes and outlet of industrial and civil structures, fauna and flora protection, construction of coastal and offshore structures, monitoring of protected areas.
The survey of the marine environment and particularly the coastal one, requires the integration of several disciplines including: physical oceanography, chemistry of the waters and of the sediments, topography, meteorology, marine geophysics, sedimentology and biology.
ENVIRONMENTAL BASELINE STUDIES
An Environmental Baseline Study (E.B.S.) aims to determine the environmental conditions in the project area prior to the start of offshore development activities. It defines the environmental conditions of the sea floor and of the water column.
An E.B.S. is required any time the human activities at sea might have an impact on the natural environmental conditions: offshore drilling, sea line construction/burial, trenching for cable laying, ports and marine constructions etc.
